- Marriage is a Legal Contract/Covenant -
For Better or For
For better or worse, richer or poorer in sickness and in health forsaking all others until death us do part.
When a modern bride and groom stand at the altar of God these words are repeated as a vow to God. This is the religious covenant and inviolate legal contract. There are no provisions for divorce anywhere in the ceremony. The normal ceremony also includes the words, " let no man put asunder." That statement of covenant and contractural restriction is abundantly clear.
Matthew 19 is where Jesus brings us back to Gods will where marriages are concerned when in verse 8 He says " but from the beginning it has not been so ordained." Jesus then goes on to say "I say to you: whoever dismisses repudiates, divorces his wife except for unchastity and marries another commits adultery and he who marries a divorced woman commits adultery." In this statement Jesus refers to the original Mosaic Law so He has covered both the Jewish and Gentile issues where marriage and divorce are concerned bringing us back to "from the beginning it has not been so ordained."
In the Christian community the ceremony of marriage as well in many secular ceremonies there is no option for divorce. The historical Jewish community knows that the party of greater guilt could never file for divorce of any of the several kinds available. Divorce on demand was not part of the original Mosaic Law. Ignorance of the purpose of Mosaic divorce has caused much discord in the body of Christ. The Mosaic laws were perverted time and time again bringing judgment upon the nation of Gods chosen time after time. Malachi 2 shows us that without a doubt.
Divorce on demand is unconstitutional in any country that has British common law for the base of its law and in many countries where it is not. It is not allowed in other religions and has brought judgment on Gods people many times through history. It seems there are two things that consistently show how close to judgment any society is, that being the lack of respect for human life and the lack of respect for marriage.
